The Blue Dog 10 Minute Musical Contest

New Vintage Theatre is excited to now accept applications for original, never performed ten minute musicals written by Canadian artists that are suitable for production in a stripped down, cabaret format. Four finalists will be selected and go into production for our first annual Blue Dog Cabaret in 2026.

The goal? To build more Canadian musicals and increase the profile of musical theatre composers and librettists.

Rules

1. Must be an original, never performed musical (book and music) written by a Canadian artist.
2. Should be suitable for performance in a stripped down, cabaret style staging.
3. Maximum of two entries per playwright/composer team.
4. The musical should not have any listing of the playwright/composer's names on it to allow for blind judging.
5. Four finalists will be selected after blind judging takes place by unidentified musical theatre professionals selected by New Vintage Theatre's Artistic Director.
6. Submission is $25* per musical. Fee should be e-transferred to info@newvintage.ca by the deadline.
7. Winning play will be determined by audience voting over the course of 2 evenings. The winning playwright & composer will receive a trophy and $1000 cheque.
