Broadway’s Top Thriller Comes to Black Box, October 23 - 27

October 21, 2024 - Traditional and unceded territory of the syilx/Okanagan people / Kelowna, B.C. – It’s the spooky season and fresh off the hit The Rocky Horror Show, New Vintage Theatre is set to open the contemporary thriller Deathtrap by Ira Levin. Directed by Artistic Director Bonnie Gratz, New Vintage is ecstatic to have the rights to the 45th anniversary production which holds the record for longest running Broadway comedy thriller and was nominated for a Tony for Best Play.

The story is about Sidney Bruhl (played by Harsh Hundal), a renowned mystery playwright who has hit a serious dry spell. Despite numerous encouragements by his much younger actress wife (Liz Flowers), Myra is unable to inspire him anymore and it appears she may be on the brink of leaving him. It is a full moon when Sidney gets sent a brilliant spec script called Deathtrap by his student Clifford Anderson (Lyndon Blacklaws) and he muses whether it is time to move from writing about killers to becoming one himself. Excitement continues after a fiery meeting with his lawyer (John Erridge) and the celebrated celebrity psychic Helga Ten Dorp (DeAnna MacArthur) who is staying at an estate next to theirs. Sidney is determined to put a plan in motion to make a comeback like no other.

The 1970’s saw Ira Levin, the uber popular author of hit films Rosemary’s Baby, The Boys from Brazil and The Stepford Wives, at the top of his game. It was 1978 when he hit the height of his career as a playwright with Deathtrap which went on to the screen in a much-lauded film adaptation starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve.

“I first saw this play as preteen in Calgary and I was riveted. It included so many twists and turns I couldn’t anticipate what would happen next - it was the first time I experienced a whole audience jumping out of our seats together-Deathtrap is so exciting,” says Bonnie Gratz, Artistic Director
